Toronto – November 19, 2016 – Each year, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is commemorated on November 25. The day was chosen by the United Nations in 1999 to honour the lives of the Mirabal sisters from the Dominican Republic, who were violently assassinated over 30 years prior.
November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, is also the beginning of the "16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence," which concludes on December 10, International Human Rights Day.
Once again, UFCW Canada is getting ready to participate in the YWCA and Rose Campaign's #NotOkay social media initiative in support in the fight to end violence against women. On November 25 at 12:00 p.m. (E.S.T.), join UFCW Canada on Twitter and Facebook and show your support to the #NotOkay campaign by tweeting using the hashtag #NotOkay, don't forget to mention @UFCWCanada. You can also download a printable poster for you to take a picture with to strengthen your voice in support of the campaign.
This year, more than ever, we call on individuals to take a stand on violence against women by sharing their voices in response to any tweets, posts, videos, images, or clips that objectify, belittle, or attack women in society.
See it. Share it. Stop it!
