Barrie, Ont. – October 12, 2016 – Recently, UFCW Canada Local Union educators and activists from across Canada gathered in Barrie, Ontario as a working group to explore and expand UFCW Canada’s program to engage members. New members join UFCW Canada Locals every day, so developing additional strategies to connect with both new and current members is an exciting opportunity to empower a new generation of activists.

Each Local Union participant shared their unique approach to member engagement through their orientation, outreach, internal organizing, focus groups and mentorship programs. This was followed by an expert guest speaker from the Tamarack Society on community development who shared many insights and methods to make meaningful connections.

The session was closed by exploring new ways to measure the effectiveness of new initiatives in member engagement. “Our strength as Canada’s most progressive workers’ organization comes from the membership,” says National President Meinema. “Member engagement is a vital component of that solidarity.”
