UFCW Canada activists Light the Night in Calgary and Montreal

Calgary and Montreal – October 22, 2015 – UFCW Canada Local 401 activists joined more than 2,220 other walkers on October 16, for the Light the Night fundraiser in Calgary. The participants gathered at twilight and set out from Calgary’s downtown Eau Claire Market.
In total, the Calgary participants raised over $515,000. Proceeds from Light the Night help fund the life-changing work of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) to raise awareness, provide counselling and educational services, and fund research to find a cure and better treatments for leukemia and other blood cancers.
During Light the Night Walks, walkers carry illuminated lanterns — a white lantern for blood cancer patients and survivors, a red one to walk as a supporter, and a gold one in memory of a loved one lost.
The next evening, on October 17, UFCW activists and their families joined more than 4,500 walkers for the 10th anniversary of Light the Night in Montreal. The procession wound its way through Jean Drapeau Park. Again this year, the Montreal event raised the highest amount of all participating cities in Canada — $1.2 million. One big reason was the TUAC Quebec team, which collectively raised more than $160,000!
Since adopting the LLSC as their charity of choice in 1985, UFCW Canada members and their union have raised over $33.8 million for the LLSC.
