UFCW a leading force at Labour Day events across Canada

Toronto – September 8, 2015 – Canada's leading and most progressive union was out in full force at Labour Day events across the country this past weekend, as UFCW Canada activists and family members joined community allies at a number of marches, picnics, and gatherings to honour the achievements of workers and the labour movement in Canada.

In Ontario, UFCW Canada activists led the way at Canada's largest Labour Day parades in Toronto and Hamilton, while also participating in events in Ottawa, London, Windsor, and other municipalities. In Toronto, parade-goers were joined by federal NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, who discussed his party's plan to bring real change to Ottawa before marching in the parade.  

In Western and Atlantic Canada, activists and family members marked the celebration at various community events, including several Labour Day picnics and gatherings.

In Quebec, activists traditionally gather to honour the accomplishments of workers and the labour movement on May 1, International Workers Day.

"Thanks to the labour movement, many of the things we take for granted today – like universal healthcare and public pensions – are now part of our everyday reality," said UFCW Canada National President Paul Meinema. "This year's Labour Day is a chance to celebrate those gains, while also committing to bring fairness back to Canada after ten years of the anti-worker Harper Government," Brother Meinema added.
