UFCW Canada youth activists rock the Prairies

Gimli, Man. – July 31, 2015 – Canada's leading union for young workers recently concluded another exhilarating week of learning and training with UFCW Canada youth activists from Manitoba and Saskatchewan at the UFCW Canada Young Workers Internship Program Prairie session.

UFCW Canada members from Locals 1400, 832, 1869 and 248P gathered in Gimli, Manitoba to participate in Canada's leading program for young labour activists. During the week-long session, the participants discovered the meaning of working collectively, as well as how to become more active in their union and in their community.

The group was also joined by UFCW Canada Local 832 President Jeff Traeger who spoke about the Local Union’s efforts to achieve better contracts and the fight for workers everywhere. President Traeger also spoke about UFCW Canada Local 832's diversity initiatives and the importance of programs like YIP, with Local 832 being well-represented with 10 members attending the session.

Continuing the popular campaign started at the Ontario YIP session, the young workers from the Prairies actively documented the week on social media with "Humans of UFCW", a social media campaign that features a collection of portraits of UFCW Canada members and their stories. Throughout the week, the young workers were able to reach over 9,000 visitors and viewers through social media.

The participants plan to take back the information they learned throughout the week and use it to empower their fellow co-workers and their communities.
