No Frills members vote to join the National Defence Fund – UFCW 1000A

No Frills members vote to join the National Defence Fund – UFCW 1000A Woodbridge, Ont. – June 16, 2015 – UFCW Canada Local 1000A members working at No Frills have voted to join the union's National Defence Fund (NDF), which provides guaranteed financial support to members in the event of a strike or lockout.

The No Frills members had been informed about the option to join the NDF through a telephone townhall conference and through notices distributed to stores and members' homes. Enrollment into the fund is effective as of July 1, 2015.

As the country's leading strike and lockout fund, the NDF provides UFCW Canada members with financial support when they need it most. It also strengthens the position of the membership during bargaining in an effort to prevent strikes and lockouts. Individual bargaining units have the opportunity to vote on joining and benefiting from the NDF if and when they see fit.

"By voting to join the NDF, the No Frills members have sent a strong and clear message to their employer," says UFCW Local 1000A President Pearl Sawyer. "The members are preparing for negotiations with the company in 2016, and in the event of a labour dispute, they will now be able to count on the NDF to strengthen their bargaining position."
