Saskatoon, Sask. – March 11, 2015 – UFCW Canada sisters from across the province gathered for an empowering two days of workshops and information sharing at the UFCW Saskatchewan Women’s Conference. The conference was hosted by the UFCW Canada Local 1400 Women’s Committee, March 6th and 7th, at the Local 1400 Training Centre. The annual conference brought together 36 UFCW Canada women activists from Locals 1400, 248P and 649. On Friday, to celebrate the upcoming International Women’s Day, the UFCW Canada sisters were also joined by more than 30 NDP women activists from across Saskatchewan. Over the course of the evening, attendees shared stories of their experiences and reasons why they personally have chosen the NDP. It was an inspirational evening where women of diverse backgrounds and lives were able to connect with each other through shared experiences.

The next day, the conference centered around Mentorship, Political Action, and Awareness. National Representative Lily Olson, and Local 1400 Representative Lucy Figueiredo facilitated a Politics Matter/Women Matter workshop. Sheri Benson, the NDP candidate in the Saskatoon West riding, spoke with the group about community building, politics and the importance of being active politically. All of the discussion and events were designed to bring a focused awareness on the upcoming elections, and the need to bring issues specific to women and families to the forefront of the debates.

As always, the UFCW Saskatchewan sisters left the conference empowered, invigorated and eager to share their new found knowledge — and looking forward to making a difference and having a voice in the upcoming federal and provincial elections.
