Edmonton and Calgary – October 9, 2014 – UFCW Local 401 actvists and family members helped Light the Night in both Edmonton and Calgary recently in support of the life-changing efforts of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC). Local 401 volunteers not only raised funds for the charity but also assisted the LLSC in the organization and management of the event, as Local 401 has become a major sponsor of the event in both locations. Local 401 volunteers worked tirelessly in these events held on September 27, and October 4, respectively. In support of the activists’ fundraising efforts, the Local 401 Executive Board generously agreed to sponsor each team with a $1,000 donation.

Local 401 member volunteers shone at both Light the Night events showing the community the strength that a union brings when standing in solidarity with a good cause. In particular, Local 401 would like to nationally recognize the dedicated efforts of members and community volunteers Maria Sarmiento and Jason Parrell of Calgary, and Jim Sherlock of Edmonton for their continuous commitment and hard work in their volunteer public outreach and is proud to have them represent Local 401 in the community.

In addition to Light the Night and other fund raising efforts throughout the year for the LLSC, Local 401 also raised an additional $17,000 earlier this season through an annual golf tournament fundraiser.
