Woodbridge, Ont. – October 6, 2014 – UFCW Canada Local 1000A’s 8th Annual Stewards Conference was very special for stewards, staff and leaders alike since this year is the 70th anniversary of UFCW Canada’s second-largest local union. The weekend conference, September 20-21, was jam-packed with training and education for Local 1000A stewards and special presentations from members, leaders and national office staff.

The conference received outstanding reviews from participants, including long-time stewards as well as those who are brand new to the labour movement.

“Everyone was so warm and welcoming,” says Jonas Hanje, Local 1000A steward at Aspect Logistics. “Being new, I had no idea what to expect, but I leave knowing solidarity rules and it is in full force at our union.”

“Every conference is different from the previous one and you still learn so much – it is so informative,” says Jameson Dickson, Local 1000A steward at Louis Dreyfus. “I left with a powerful feeling of solidarity. That is the essence of the union – you got to stick together to achieve what is fair and just for working people.”

In honour of the 70th anniversary, the theme for this year’s conference was Remembering our Past, Fighting for our Future. “Our 70th anniversary is about remembering the achievements of great activists who made a difference in the lives of so many Local 1000A members,” says Pearl Sawyer, Local 1000A President. “It’s also about reaffirming and strengthening our commitment to defending our members’ rights and interests, pushing for healthy and safe workplaces, building a fairer and more just society, and fighting for good jobs that pay a living wage and lift up families out of poverty.”
