Another successful YIP season of UFCW youth activism

Harrison Hot Springs, B.C. – August 26, 2014 – UFCW Canada's acclaimed Youth Internship Program (YIP) has wrapped up for another season, as 15 UFCW youth activists recently gathered in Harrison Hot Springs, British Columbia. This year’s Western YIP session, August 16 - 22, brought together UFCW Canada activists from B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan for Canada’s leading program for youth and labour activists.
The youth members from UFCW Canada Locals 1518, 247, 401, 1118, and 1400 had a busy and empowering week of workshops learning about their union, the media, the impact of globalization, how to build fairness, and what they can do as activists to bring positive change in the workplace and in the community. Other sessions covered collective bargaining, labour history, organizing strategies, and the role of being a union steward.
The young activists also put their energy into creating materials for other youth members as well as producing five inspirational videos about their beliefs about unions. Informed and ready as youth activists, this latest group of YIP graduates proudly join 40 other youth members who also attended YIP sessions earlier this season in the Atlantic, Ontario, and Prairie Regions.
