By The Numbers: North America’s Largest Food Retailers

According to the Supermarket News (SN), for the first time ever all 75 companies in the Top 75 food retailers and wholesalers in North America achieved annual sales in excess of $1 billion.

Four companies debuted in the SN’s 2012 list, with Target Corp. holding the number four spot. Target was added to the list as a result of expanding its food section in recent years. Target’s groceries and pet supplies represent 19% of its $70 billion sales, or approximately $13.3 billion. (www.supermarketnews.com)

Walmart is leading the SN Top 75 list with total sales $264 billion in the North American market. According to a Wall Street journal article, “groceries accounted for 55% of Wal-Mart's $264.2 billion in sales for the year ending Jan. 31, 2012, up from 41% just four years ago.” (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304373804577522912244866078.html)
