Unionbusting becoming even more popular

In Wisconsin a republican governor announced a state budget plan that strips state employees of nearly all their collective bargaining rights, cuts pay and benefits and says there will be no negotiations. And to top it off he has alerted the National Guard to be ready in case of strikes or protests.

In Ohio senate republicans have introduced legislation that would eliminate collective bargaining for al state employees and remove binding arbitration for police and firefighters who don’t have the right to strike.

And if we think that this can only happen in the U.S. lets take a look at what’s happening in the city of Toronto. Transit workers are about to have their right to strike stripped away and the city’s new mayor has launched an attack against city workers starting with attempts to privatize city garbage collection.

So after Conservative and Liberal governments in the U.S. and Canada create economic chaos with failed policies like massive corporate tax cuts for the wealthiest corporations, bailouts of banks and financial institutions and deregulation where do they look to solve the problems their failed policies created? On the backs of hard working union members.

This attack on unions is self defeating. The North American middle class exists because of unions. As unions disappear income disparities grow, poverty increases and society becomes more secure.

Fortunately we have a number of elections this year both federal and provincial. As these elections approach lets make sure we look at who is really responsible  for the economic problems we face and lets vote in support those who support good paying family supporting union jobs.
