Local 832 opens new training centre and union office

UFCW Canada Local 832 recently unveiled an exciting new resource for members in the City of Brandon and the Westman area of Manitoba: a new Training Centre and Union Office.

The new training centre was officially opened by Local 832 President Jeff Traeger, who was joined by the Mayor of Brandon, Shari Decter-Hirst, and the MLA for Brandon East, Drew Caldwell.

The new facility will offer computer labs, training rooms, kitchen facilities and a space for the local union’s family program. Eventually the training centre will offer space for community groups to rent for special events.

Local 832 purchased the building in 2008 after realizing the increased need for its English as an additional language (EAL) and Grade 12 diploma programs, along with shop steward and health and safety courses.

“The Westman area continues to grow and its diversity in the community has been evolving over the last number of years,” says President Traeger. “When our new members arrive from other countries and make the Westman area their home, we want to offer them every opportunity to learn our language and learn new skills. Our new training centre will give them that opportunity.”

Local 832 is the province’s leader in EAL training with training facilities in Winnipeg, Neepawa and now Brandon.
