Politics NOW!

Starting this month, UFCW Canada activists will have a new resource in their political action toolboxes. Politics NOW! is a new weekly bulletin published by the National Political Action Department that focuses on the political stories and issues that are most important to UFCW Canada members and their communities.

Politics NOW!comes on the heels of the union’s first-ever national political action conference recently held in Ottawa, and just in time for UFCW Canada’s 250,000 members to make a significant difference in five provincial elections scheduled for 2011. Voters are getting set to go to the polls in Manitoba, Ontario, P.E.I., Newfoundland & Labrador, and Saskatchewan.

“As Canada’s largest private-sector union, with thousands of members in every region of the country, UFCW Canada has the ability to be a defining political force at every level of government,” says UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley.

In addition to the five provincial contests, there is also a strong chance that voters will find themselves in the midst of a federal election sometime this year.

“To maximize UFCW Canada’s political power, we have to make sure we are using every opportunity to combine our efforts at the local, provincial and national levels,” added Brother Hanley. “Through initiatives likes the National Political Action Network, the National Political Action Conference, the political action web page, and now the weekly information bulletin, UFCW Canada is well on its way to becoming the political force that it can and must become.”

Activists who subscribe to Politics NOW! will receive the weekly newsflash every Thursday. Politics Now! will also be available throughout the week on the UFCW Canada Political Action web page.
