Top Leukemia Researchers Recognized by UFCW Canada

On October 22, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) along with UFCW Canada recognized the groundbreaking work, dedication and commitment of some of Canada’s top blood cancer researchers, through awards and grants presented during a luncheon held at the Hyatt Regency in Toronto.

Rob Edwards, president of Local 12R24 (pictured), presented the UFCW Canada Local 12R24 Research Award to Dr. Christopher J. Paige for his important research into induced immunity in leukemia.

Dr. Paige is the Vice President of Research at the University Health Network in Toronto, as well as Senior Scientist at the Ontario Cancer Institute.

Bryan Neath, UFCW Canada Director of the Ontario Region (pictured below), had the honour to present the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada Research Award to Dr. Chinten James Lim for his breakthrough research into drug resistance in pediatric leukemia.

Dr. Lim is a researcher and scientist at the Child and Family Research Institute in Vancouver, and Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia.

In 2009, through the members’ dedication and commitment to the cause, UFCW Canada raised more than $1.6 million to help find a cure and more effective treatments for blood cancers — reaffirming UFCW Canada as the largest annual source of donations for funding the research efforts of the LLSC.

Since adopting the LLSC as its charity of choice 25 years ago, UFCW Canada members and Local Unions have raised over $21 million for research into leukemia, lymphoma and other blood diseases.
