Bottle Drive caps awesome efforts

Friends and supporters across Ontario have used their empty bottles to prove once again that their hearts are full when it comes to finding a cure for Leukemia, Lymphoma and other blood related cancers.

During the last weekend of May, UFCW Canada Local 12R24 and The Beer Store once again teamed up for the annual “Returns for Leukemia” bottle drive, which invites people to donate their bottle deposit refunds, pocket change and checkout contributions to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC).

Since Returns for Leukemia was started in 2004, the annual bottle drive has donated over $2.3 million to the fight for a cure.

“The success of this event is made possible by the dozens of UFCW Canada activists who come out with their families to volunteer their time, loud voices, and strong backs to help customers make a difference with their returns and other contributions, and to help the stores process all the extra empties that come pouring in during the bottle drive,” says Local 12R24 President Rob Edwards.

The bottle drive has become the union’s big finish to an awesome annual fundraising effort that involves UFCW Canada members across the country devoting themselves to a series of traditional and sometimes ingenious fundraising events.

The grand total for the union’s 2009-2010 fundraising efforts will be announced at the upcoming UFCW Canada Gala, which – in addition to raising even more money for leukemia research – is dedicated to celebrating the membership’s outstanding contribution to the LLSC and the fight for a cure.
