Young workers get ‘real’

UFCW Canada community organizers recently met with over 700 students in Ajax, Ontario, as part of the union’s ongoing effort to build relationships with young workers. The gathering was organized by the Durham District School Board as part of its annual “Reality Day”, where students are encouraged to start thinking about their lives after high school.

“Today is a really good opportunity to talk to youth about their work, their rights as workers, and to help them understand that unions are here to help them exercise those rights,” says national representative Sarah Neath, pictured talking to youth at the event with UFCW Canada Local 1000A organizer Leanne Wilkins.

In addition to having a number of conversations about workplace rights, Sisters Neath, Wilkins and UFCW Canada Local 175 activist and special projects representative (SPUR) Laura Morton handed out hundreds of Know Your Rights booklets and talked to a number of youth about the union’s local, national and international scholarships.
