Gail Mack, Local 1400

Real Canadian Superstore
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Gail has been a Shop Steward or Chief Steward for the last nineteen of her 28years working as a cashier at the Confederation Park location of Real Canadian Superstore (Loblaw) in Saskatoon.

During her time working at the store, she says that she has seen many changes in the workplace, both good and bad. After being a Shop Steward for twelve years, she was given the opportunity to become the Chief Steward. She states that she had no problem stepping into this role and felt that it was just another step that she could take to continue in her work helping others overcome the injustices in the workplace.

Further opportunities for Gail, such as being on the local’s Executive Board, becoming a workplace Union Counselor, participating with her Representative in grievance resolution meetings with the company, and taking on a role as an active member of the Women’s Committee has given her the opportunity to be a voice for her fellow members with the union, in the workplace and in the community.

She has taken part in many conferences and classes hosted by the union and labour bodies, these having given her more knowledge and further confidence.

With her husband, who is a union member with the Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union, they have raised two daughters who are now in their mid twenties, one working at a bank and one working at another Local 1400 shop, both in Saskatoon.  She is also very proud of her two year-old grandson Luca and loves spending time with him.

To relax and unwind, she enjoys camping, swimming, and reading. She is also an avid poker player and enjoys helping to raise money for leukemia research so, with her husband, can be found participating in many Texas Hold’em or casino evenings hosted through the UFCW.
